Revised Rail Proposal Stops Short of Ala Moana

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi is submitting an updated proposal to the FTA that will stop the Honolulu Rail short of Ala Moana. Many residents who support the rail also emphasize that it must finish at Ala Moana.  Blangiardi's new plan will have it stop short at Halekuwila and South Street, two stations shorter than the Ala Moana proposal.

In 2012 when the rail project was approved, the estimated cost was $5 billion.  That cost has ballooned to over $12 billion, per 2021's last estimate.  Ridership is always a topic of concern among locals, given the cost of the project.  Expectations are that ridership would greatly increase if the rail finished all the way to Ala Moana Center.

The Mayor emphasized that an extension is a possibility in the future.
